The Getaway Family Camp is a 3-day residential camp experience for burn survivors of any age and their family/ support team, who have been treated in California, or are current residents of California. Each year, approximately 120 participants attend this camp at Camp Oakhurst in Coarsegold, California (near Yosemite).

The Getaway Family Camp is open to all burn survivors and their families and it is fully staffed by volunteers and AARBF employee – many of whom are also burn unit nurses, adult burn survivors and firefighters. Activities at the camp include Ropes Course, horseback riding, crafts, archery, paintball, camp fire, support groups, and family centered activities. The main focus of camp is for burn survivors to have fun and focus on family through their healing journey. Camp provides a safe environment where families can play, learn, grow, gain self-esteem, and make new friends.

At Camp Oakhurst, the terrain is rustic with dirt roads and has a wilderness feel. Participants will be assigned cabins which have both heating and air conditioning. Most cabins have bunk beds and some have showers. Camp Oakhurst has a no pet policy. Certain activities available through Camp Oakhurst have age, weight and height restrictions.

This event is held over Labor Day weekend. Arrival to camp is 2:00pm on Saturday and departure is Monday after breakfast. Burn survivors are able to bring up to four individuals with them. Please note: Adult burn survivors may only bring a spouse or domestic partner and your own children to this event. Child burn survivors may only bring their parent(s) and siblings living in the same home. There is typically a $25 per person fee for this activity. Registration is on a first come/first served basis. If you miss the registration period, you may request to be added to a cancelation wait list.
