"It was an amazing evening. We had beautiful weather. Lots of people came in costumes - sailors, pirates, Isaac from the 'Love Boat' and a whole table dressed as "Gilligan's Island" characters. It all contributed to a festive evening," said Emily Goldman, emcee at the 6th Annual Hook & Ladder Ball, October 25, 2008.

Guests were inspired by the celebratory atmosphere, music and auction items and donated more than $35,000. The winner of the raffle took home $845, with matching funds going to AARBF. The most coveted and highest-earning silent auction item – bringing in $2,600 – was a fire helmet with a hand-painted Hook & Ladder Ball logo by George Smith, a San Francisco fire fighter.

Attendees rose to the occasion in the Fund-An-Item auction. Bidders raised their paddles in promise to fund a need of AARBF, such as providing funds for scald prevention kits for classroom education or one night's hotel accommodation for the family of a recently injured burn survivor. Funds to send six children to Champ Camp were raised this way.

AARBF honored three firefighters who display notable dedication and commitment to their community. Erika Arteseros from the San Francisco Fire Department, Chris Gordon from the Santa Clara County Fire Department, and Jen Landsberg from the Berkeley Fire Department were acknowledged and presented with a plaque.

High spirits continued on the dance floor to close out the successful evening.

"AARBF has the good fortune of having a solid, committed donor base that, in even these tough economic times, donated a lot and had a lot of fun while doing it," said Scott Vandrick, AARBF Executive Director.
