AARBF
Financially Sound Thanks to Donors and Close Management
In 2009, a tough
economic year in which nearly 30% of nonprofits in California closed,
the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation both came in under budget and
still provided its high-quality core programs. At the end of '09,
AARBF had more than $15,000 surplus.
"The most important
thing is that we're still out there doing what we do - survivor
services and burn prevention," said Board of Directors President
Mike "Otter" Gonzales. He easily gives credit to the staff, Board,
fundraiser leaders and supporters. "Many people made it happen.
There are a couple of things I'm very proud of."
Among those
are: Funders really stepped up and donated. Volunteers and supporters
across the state kept holding fundraisers. AARBF ran understaffed
the last six months, but employees kept up its programs. Executive
Director Scott Vandrick's fiscal capabilities allowed AARBF to make
quick adjustments throughout the year. And the Board was watchful
about how to make it through the year within budget, yet also focused
on future stability by establishing an endowment.
The $50,000
initially invested in the endowment is seed money for future AARBF
services; each year, 5% of the total endowment will be paid to the
Foundation. AARBF will be intent on growing the endowment in future
years.
While AARBF
came out ahead in 2009, the road wasn't easy. AARBF cut its budget
24% from 2008, its income decreased nearly 20%.
"I want people
to know that we are doing so well because the funders and donors
we have believe in our mission. We keep providing quality programs
and communicating them to supporters," said Jessica Derrick, Director
of Development.
As an example,
Jessica points out that the annual appeal brought in $5,000 more
than the prior year. And she noted special recognition for the largest
fundraisers - the Los Angeles Firefighters, Central Coast, Peninsula
and North Bay relays, the Hook & Ladder Ball, and the Bachelor Auction.
AARBF thanks
every last donor and supporter for making 2009 a successful year!
