Regional Events

Description: Bestfriend Forever

“Peer support lends hope and confidence to burn survivors recovering their lives after an injury. Participation in peer programs increases self-esteem and self-worth.” —Jill Sproul, RN, Burn Center Nurse Manager

Regional survivor events are scheduled throughout the year, and are open to burn survivors 5 to 17 years old (some age restrictions may apply).  Many of these events are region-specific with limited space and limited pick-up locations. Weekend trips and activities allow burn survivors to feel supported in their journey and bring burn survivors, staff, counselors, volunteers and fire service professionals together.

AARBF Regional events include:

"I am so glad that AARBF now offers a retreat for all of the survivors that end up aging out of Champ Camp. It helps to make new friends and keep in touch with old friends. I had a great weekend creating new memories," —Angel C., Age 26

The Retreat

The Retreat provides a survivor-driven program allowing the opportunity for approximately 20 adult burn survivors to learn about their healing process and their journey as a burn survivor.

The Retreat is for adult burn survivors 21+ and is an intensive weekend, developed by burn survivors for burn survivors, and includes workshops, support groups and promotes healing, self-discovery and socialization. It is hosted at Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria, CA over President's Day Weekend.

The Retreat Adult Burn Camp provides:

  • A safe place for burn-injured adult to get away from the stares and unwanted attention associated with being burned;
  • A loving and supportive family atmosphere that helps soothe the potentially devastating emotional and physical pain a burn injury;
  • An opportunity to meet others who have been through a similar experience and to be part of new and challenging activities together; and
  • A program that ensures that adult burn survivors have a great time!

Ski Trips

The Northern California and Southern California regions host trips annually with generous support from Bear Valley Resort, China Peak Resort, and Ebbetts Pass Fire District. These events are held during the month of March and are open to 25 burn survivors 7-17 years old. The Ski trips are an opportunity to learn a new skill, feel a sense of accomplishment and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.  Our goal is for each participant to experience a traditional fun-filled weekend of laughter, games, s’mores with their friends.
